    Spanish at Manor Wood

    Intent:

At Manor Wood Primary School, our aim for the Spanish curriculum is to foster a genuine interest in learning languages through enjoyable and engaging experiences. We focus on building children’s confidence and nurturing their curiosity about language.

Our MFL curriculum is structured to develop language skills through regular, targeted lessons. Students will gradually acquire, utilise, and apply an expanding vocabulary organised around various topics, such as, the alphabet and phonics, numbers, colours, food and drink and the classroom.

By the time students leave Manor Wood Primary, we aspire for them to possess a natural curiosity and confidence to explore different countries, cultures, and languages. In our multilingual society, we recognise the importance of effective communication in another language as a valuable skill. We are committed to embedding essential skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, empowering children to use their Spanish knowledge in diverse contexts and laying a solid foundation for future language learning.

    Implementation

    Substantive Knowledge:

Our children explore Spanish through listening, speaking, reading and writing. La Jolie Ronde scheme is followed in which children are introduced to a variety of topics over Key Stage 2.  These include: numbers, colours and introducing themselves and their families; which are developed further as they learn to express their opinions on food, animals, the weather and where they live.

Listening: Children listen to authentic Spanish speakers and authentic Spanish songs

Speaking: Children are encouraged to practise speaking Spanish in a safe and engaging environment.

Writing: Children are taught how to express themselves in writing as they develop their linguistic skills.

Reading: Children are encouraged to read poems, songs and stories to develop their knowledge of the Spanish language.

    Disciplinary approaches:

Children are encouraged to be linguists.

La Jolie Ronde scheme is currently being adapted across school to focus on the following three linguistic areas: an understanding of phonics, a range of vocabulary and grammatical rules.

Teaching children how to pronounce Spanish graphemes, encouraging them to learn a range of vocabulary and giving them the tools to understand the structure of the language, allows them to own and create their own expressions of the language, be this in spoken or written form.

    Further information

At Manor Wood, our curriculum is built around our three Golden threads:  Alfresco, Reading and Research, and Believing and Belonging.  Our MFL curriculum provides opportunities to integrate opportunities for all three: playing cultural playground games outside, researching traditions around festivals such as Christmas and Easter, and understanding that speaking a language gives us an opportunity to belong and celebrate with a global community.
